What does 2018 hold for the publishing industry?

At the start of a new year our attention inevitably turns to friends and family, resolutions, and the inevitable industry predictions.  

Always keen to prepare for the future, we thought we’d share a couple of hot topics for the year ahead taken from a post on What’s New in Publishing. So crystal balls at the ready, here are our key predictions for the year ahead that publishers must not overlook.


One topic that’s sure to dominate the digital publishing landscape over the coming months is the forthcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Coming into effect on 25 May 2018, it offers businesses the chance to improve on their practices and put the consumer first.

GDPR is designed to give EU citizens more control over their personal data, and its impact will be felt far wider than just the EU. Consent will be required before any personal data is collected, so every business that collects, processes and stores personal data will become liable for data misuse.

Publishers will have to seek out new sources of first-party data through real-time location and context data. GDPR will change the way data is used to target customers, and see publishers focusing on real-time segmentation and targeting in order to remain compliant. Is your business ready for GDPR?

2 Integration – less is more

Clark Gilbert, a former professor of entrepreneurial management at Harvard Business School, has stated: “In industries that are being disrupted, only 9% of companies make it. Of the 9% that make it, all of them had set up a separate disruptive business unit.”

Gilbert also discovered that publishers who separate the online and print segments of their business were twice as innovative, with 60% higher market penetration that those which remained integrated.

It’s impossible to know exactly what 2018 has in store, but preparing for GDPR and streamlining your digital transformation program will give you a competitive edge for the year ahead.
