Open Access Trends: The Ones To Watch

open access trendsWhen you look at the fundamentals of the open access principle, you can’t really fault it. Free, immediate online access to research articles and academic literature is never going to be a bad thing. With open access publishing comes not just the re-use of information, but the ability for individuals to make decisions based on evidence. And decisions based on anything less just don’t deliver.

Two recent reports – Open Access Journal Publishing 2016-2020 and Open Access Book Publishing 2016-2020 – have predicted the OA trends to look out for over the coming year. Three of the key trends to come out of those reports are identified in an article in Yahoo! Finance.

More subscriptions tied to open access

It’s expected that library consortia and multi-campus universities will ‘play hardball’ with their journal subscription renewals. By holding back renewals, they can put pressure on commercial publishers. This is a strategy designed to reduce costs and secure contractual assurances relating to the advancement of open access.

The growing predatory journal problem

There is a tried and tested business model within the world of open access; by paying an APC (article processing charge) when a paper is accepted, authors have taken OA publishing to new heights. However, it has also provided a gateway for less scrupulous publishers to ‘create an appearance of legitimacy, but do little more than collect APCs and post articles to the web.’ This unsavoury trend will continue in 2017.

The rise of content sharing

With so many sites offering STM content for free, publishers are creating their own sharing policies. Last year saw trial programs from Springer Nature and Elsevier allowing researchers to freely share peer-reviewed content. More publishers are expected to follow suit in 2017.
